A dish which a baked goodness made which lots of veggies, spices. Similarity could be drawn to dhokla since base ingredients are the same however this includes a lot of veggies and other ingredients to pack in big flavours in a bite.
This is my MILs recipe from a book she referred to and has now handed to me. Navvadhusathi Paakkriya by Indira Vasudev. (For the new bride). Well I'm no longer new..;) but I'm glad to takeover.
Ingredients
Chana dal - 2 cups
Besan - 2 cups
Cabbage - 1/2 kg or one big (optional is banana flower)
Tomatoes-100 gms
Vatana/peas - 200 gms
Onion - 4-5 big
Garlic - 1 whole bunch
Jeera - 1 tsp
Pepper - 6
Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
Coconut - 1/2
Soda - 1/4 tsp
Green chillies - 4
Red chillies dry- 2
Hing - 1/4 tsp
Sugar - 1 tsp
Masala - 1 tsp
Garam masala - 1 tbsp
Salt to taste
Tumeric powder
Oil- 3/4th cup
Coriander leaves - a handful
Method
1) Soak the chana dal overnight. Grind it along with Jeera, pepper, coriander seeds garlic, chillies, salt, masalas , coconut scrapping, salt. Make a coarse paste.
2) Cut the cabbage , onion , tomatoes into small pieces.
3) Mix besan with the chana dal ground paste. Mix well.
4) Add the veggies and coriander leaves to this paste. Ur almost there now.
5) Check salt and masalas..can adjust as per need.
6) Heat the oil slightly cool and add to the above mix.
7) Add soda and mix well.
8) Preheat the oven at 230 celsius and bake the dish at 230o for a good 45 minutes (it’s done when the top starts giving cracks and turns brown)
8) Cool and cut into pieces.
