I was very impressed when a friend shared the recipe for jowar salad. So when I saw jowar (original form) in big bazaar yesterday couldn't resist. Then was kinda bored to make it as a salad for evening snack. So surfed the net for its cooking techniques etc. And decided to make upma. It was very delicious. Made it like vegetable upma so packed it with flavours. It's a bit chewy but gives a good filling sensation in the stomach even with a small bowl. Definitely a must try. Now for the recipe.
Ingredients
Jowar - 1 bowl
Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds -1/2 tsp
Udit dal - 1 tsp
Ghee - 1/2tsp (optional)
Onion - 1 small
Tomato - 1 small
Potato -1 small
Peas - a fistful
Ginger - 1 " peice
Green chilli - 1 spicy variety
Curry leaves - a sprig
Salt to taste.
Coconut to garnish
Method
1) Soak the jowar dana overnight if u want to make the upma at morning or in the morning for making in the evening ... Approx 5-7 hours. Then pressure cook it with 1&1/2cups of water.
2) Release the pressure and fluff it up with a fork and keep ready. If there is little water left it is okay. It will get absorbed while making the upma.
3)In a pan add the oil and ghee heat it up and add mustard seeds . When it splutters add udit dal and curry leaves.
4) Then add onion finely chopped and ginger scrapped fry till translucent.
5)Add tomatoes chopped finely fry for a minute and add the shelled peas and cubed potatoes. Cook by adding little water at a time.
6) Then add the pressure cooked jowar , salt and give it a good stir, so all flavour are mixed well. Cook this for a while.
7) Serve hot garnished with scrapped coconut.
