Kala chana/ black garbanzo beans Sundal

It is considered auspicious to have chana (Black garbanzo beans) on Friday. The belief was that if you eat chana on Friday, Goddess Lakshmi would be pleased with you and shower some extra blessings on you.

Believe it or not this sundal is a very delicious and healthy. Mildy spiced it can be had separately or along with dal rice combo. You can avoid the masalas I have added and also make it simple with just the tadka/tempering.

Ingredients

Raw chana -1 cup

Fresh coconut - 2 tbsp

For tadka/tempering

Oil-1 tbsp

Mustard seeds -1/2tsp

Udit dal -1/2 tsp

Curryleaves -1 sprig

Asafoetida - a big pinch

Masalas used

Red chilli powder - 3/4  tsp

Corianderpowder - 3/4 tsp

Salt to taste

Method

1) Soak the chana overnight. Drain and fill water over the chana and pressure cook for four whistles on medium flame. Let the pressure go , then drain and keep the chana to cool

2) In a small pan add oil , then mustard seeds and udit dal . When it splutters add the curry leaves crushed with hand and asafoetida.

3) Add the chana along with masalas and salt to taste. Mix well and let it remain for a minute.

4) Put coconut and give a final mix. Do naivedyam(offer to the goddess) and serve hot
