Vanpayar/ lal chowli / red cowpeas sundal

As explained in my earlier post Sundal/chundal a variety of prasad which is prepared during navratri with various lentils. Some are salty and spicy  whereas some are sweet.

This one is my personal favorite. Made from lal chowli / red cowpeas or lobia it's sweet and sticky which increases it's yummyness count more.

Ingredients

Lal chowli - 1 cup

Jaggery  - 3/4 cup

Coconut -1/2 cup

Cardamom powder - 1 tsp

Vanilla icecream..optional

Method

1) Wash , add little water and keep the cowpeas to cook in a pressure cooker. 3 whistles on medium flame.

2) Take out after pressure goes and drain the water. Mash the peas slightly with a spoon. If not cooked well recook it.

3) In the water that is drained and keep add the jaggery and keep on heat. Once it melts strain it through a sieve for impurities and again keep on gas. Let is come to a good boil and reduce.

4) Add the mashed peas to the jaggery , give a good stir and let it cook together for about 2 to 3 minutes.

5) Then add the coconut grated and cardamom powder and stir in all together. All will form a thick mass together this is the indication that the dish is ready.

6) Offer to goddess and serve hot or cold. Can also try to variate by adding vanilla icecream.
