Karamani sundal

Sundal or chundal as some people call it is a semi spicy offering made to Goddess during Navratri. This is a typically South Indian styled recipe using dals whole or deskinned as the base.

Golu(a decoration with dolls made of wood or ceramic or any other material representing different gods. ) is kept in many households. More about this in my other post. Ladies are invited home and thamboolam /vethala paak is offered. This consists of betel leaf, supari, haldi pieces or in powder form, kumkum, sundal and a small gift. It's a time to celebrate the female form in all its glory.

Now for the simple recipe of this particular chundal. Karamani – Black eyed peas – Lobia has one advantage. Even If you forgot to soak overnight, just 3 hrs soaking is fine for this. It gets easy cooked. Since I had planned I soaked it overnight. This can be made during pooja or even as a snack. Further steps are detailed below

Ingredients
Karamani /chowli bean / cow peas - 1 cup
Oil 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Udit dal - 1 tsp
Coconut scraped - 1 tbsp
Dhania powder /coriander powder - 1 tsp(optional)
Red chilli powder -1/2 tsp (optional)
Tumeric powder 1/4 tsp
Salt
Coriander leaves

1) Pressure cook for 2 whistles with a little bit of tumeric powder. You can also just cook it outside with water in a bowl.. Will take about 20 min on constant boiling flame.
Once done drain and keep aside to cook. You can reserve the water to be used in dal or vegetables later.

2) In a pan add oil of choice. Some prefer to make it in coconut oil. Once heated add in mustard seeds let it splutter and immediately add udit dal.. Get it golden ensure not to make to too dark or burn. Next goes in asefoetida and curry leaves. Stir all the above.

3) Add in the cooked legume, coconut, salt, spices and give a good stir. Can a bit of the reserved water to bring it all together. Keep on flame for 5 minutes.

4) Switch of the flame, add coriander leaves and take out in a bowl.

5) Offer to the Goddess if you are making it as a prasad and then serve to self and guest.
